The Great Great Mountain
Forest Rogaine |
The event headquarters (the hash
house, camping area, and start/finish area) is located at the Yale Forestry
Camp in the middle of the Great Mountain Forest, about halfway between
Norfolk, CT and Falls Village, CT. This is in the northwest corner of
Connecticut, about 5 miles south of the Massachusetts border and 10 miles
east of the New York border. Below are directions from various locations. From Southern New York state (anywhere from Dutchess County or further south) or from Southwestern Connecticut: Find your way to Rt. 7, which runs north/south along the CT/NY border, and then follow Rt. 7 to Falls Village, which is on Rt. 7 about 7 miles south of the Massachusetts border. From the intersection of Rt. 7 and Rt. 126 in Falls Village, go east on Rt. 126. After 2.0 miles, turn right (east) onto Rt. 63. After about 0.6 miles, turn left (northeast) onto Cobble Road. After 1.0 miles, turn left (west) onto Under Mountain Road. Go about 0.3 miles, and turn right (north) onto Canaan Mountain Road. After about 1.5 miles, you'll see the Rustling Winds Stables on the right. 400 meters past the stables, on the right, is a small dirt road, with a sign next to it saying "Great Mountain Forest." Take that dirt road, and follow it for 2 miles to the Yale Forestry Camp (about halfway to the camp you'll see another dirt road on the left--don't take that road--just continue straight). At the Yale Forestry Camp, parking is in the field on the right (west) side of the road; camping is on the left (east) side of the road, in the field surrounding the larger building. From Western Massachusetts: Find your way to Rt. 7 in western Massachusetts. Go south on Rt. 7 to the CT border. Stay on Rt. 7, and about 5.3 miles south of the MA/CT border, turn left (east) onto Under Mountain Road (there will be a sign at this intersection for Rustling Winds Stables). Go east on Under Mountain Road for about 3.0 miles, and go left (north) on Canaan Mountain Road. After about 1.5 miles, you'll see the Rustling Winds Stables on the right. 400 meters past the stables, on the right, is a small dirt road, with a sign next to it saying "Great Mountain Forest." From Eastern Massachusetts and Northeastern Connecticut: Find your way to Rt. 8 (Rt. 8 runs north/south, through Torrington). Follow Rt. 8 to Winsted, CT (on Rt. 8 about 10 miles north of Torrington). In Winsted, take Rt. 44 northwest for about 10 miles, to Norfolk. In the middle of Norfolk, go left (south) on Rt. 272. Very quickly (after about 200 meters) go right on Mountain Road. Stay on this road for about 4.5 miles. This road will change names a couple of times, and part of it will be dirt, but stay on it until just after a large lake. When you come to an intersection (the signs will say Steep Road and Wangum Road), go left (south) on Wangum Road (this will be the one that is paved). After about 0.7 miles, look for a small dirt road on the left (east), with a sign saying "Great Mountain Forest" (if you get to the Rustling Winds Stables, you've gone too far by 400 meters). Take that dirt road, and follow it for 2 miles to the Yale Forestry Camp (about halfway to the camp you'll see another dirt road on the left--don't take that road--just continue straight). At the Yale Forestry Camp, parking is in the field on the right (west) side of the road; camping is on the left (east) side of the road, in the field surrounding the larger building. From Southern and Southeastern Connecticut: Find your way to Rt. 8, and follow Rt. 8 to Torrington. In Torrington, go west on Rt. 4. After about 6.3 miles, go right (north) on Rt. 63. After about 7.5 miles, go right (north) on Under Mountain Road. After about 1.7 miles, go right on Canaan Mountain Road.
