Permanent Orienteering Courses
Western Connecticut Orienteering Club

Western Connecticut Orienteering Club maintains three permanent orienteering courses, one in Tarrywile Park in Danbury, one near the White Memorial Foundation in Litchfield, and one at Macedonia State Park near Kent.

Each control location on a permanent course is marked by a small (about 4" x 4") plastic or metal orange and white marker, usually nailed to a tree. Keep in mind that these markers are occasionally vandalized, so if you are sure you are at the right location but there is no marker, it's possible the marker is missing.

Alternatively, the maps for the permanent course at Tarrywile Park can be purchased for a small fee at the Tarrywile Mansion. Directions to the parking area for the mansion can be found here.

Permanent Course at White Memorial Foundation, Litchfield, CT

The maps for the permanent course near Litchfield are also available at the White Memorial Foundation, which is about 2 miles west of downtown Litchfield on Rt. 202.  There is a small charge (around $2) for the maps. The master map-i.e., the map that shows the location of the orienteering markers-is also at White Memorial. So you buy a map, and then copy the locations of the markers from the master map onto your map.

They occasionally run out of the maps, so it is a good idea to first call to make sure they have maps in stock. The number for the White Memorial Foundation is 860.567.0857.

The map itself is of an area that is a few miles south of Litchfield. To get to the map location, go to the center of Litchfield (i.e., the intersection of Rt. 202 and Rt. 63), and go south on Rt. 63 for 3-4 miles. You'll see a small parking area just off Rt. 63, with a trail entrance nearby. On the map, the main north-south road that runs roughly down the middle of the map is Rt. 63, and you should be able to spot the parking area and trailhead on the map.

The maps for Macedonia State Park may also be obtained from Backcountry Outfitters on the Kent Green (860.927.3377). As usual, it is a good idea to call first to assure they have maps in stock. To find Backcountry Outfitters, from the intersection of Rt. 341 and Rt. 7 in Kent, go north on Rt. 7, and go about 100 meters past the railroad tracks. Turn right (there is a sign for Backcountry Outfitters there). Go about 150 meters and turn right again. The store is on your right.

To find Macedonia State Park, from the intersection of Rt. 341 and Rt. 7 in Kent, go west on Rt. 341 for about 2 miles. Turn right on Macedonia Brook Road, and follow this road into the park.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us.

A Note on the Previous Permanent Course at Osbornedale State Park, Derby, CT

WCOC used to maintain a permanent orienteering course at Osbornedale State Park, in Derby, CT, but due to vandalism over the years, we have decided not to maintain this course. Some of the markers may still be in place, so if you would like to try (what is left of) this course, the information is below.

Click here for a pdf version of the Osbornedale permanent course. The control descriptions are also available (this is a rather old copy of the control descriptions--the contact information at the bottom of control descriptions is out of date).

From Rt. 8, go west on Rt. 34 about 1.5 miles. Turn right on Cedric Ave., go about 0.2 miles, then turn left onto Hawthorne Ave. The Kellogg Environmental Center is on the left in just about a 1/2 mile. The center is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 to 4:30. Their phone is 203.734.2513. They occasionally run out of maps, so it is a good idea to call first.
