The 2004 Intercollegiate Championships
and Two Day A-Meet, April 3-4

Updated 3/26/04

As noted on the main page, a portion of I-95, about 15 miles south of the meet site, was damaged in an accident and is expected to remain closed for the next 2 to 3 weeks. The closed portion affects the typical route many orienteers would have used to get to the meet site. So, here are a few suggestions for avoiding the problem area.

Eventually, you need to get to Route 8, which connects Bridgeport and Waterbury, and runs within a couple of miles of both meet sites. Usually, you would get to Route 8 either from I-84 in Waterbury, or from I-95 in Bridgeport. It's the Bridgeport I-95 connection to Route 8 that's now closed. So:

  • For most of you in NEOC, UNO, GMOC, upper HVO land, SVO, EMPO, and generally in the areas more or less north of the meet site: you would normally have equally good options of getting to Rt. 8 either via I-84 or I-95. At this point, you definitely want to take the I-84 option, i.e., find your way to I-84, go south on Rt. 8 in Waterbury, and then follow the directions under the '===' below.

  • If the I-84 option above really doesn't work for you, then find your way to Rt. 15 (Rt. 15 is also called the Merritt Parkway, and runs about 5 miles north of, and parallel to, I-95). In Trumbull, go north on Rt. 8 (Exit 52), and follow the directions under the '===' below.

To find the general location of the meet sites, find the Housatonic River where it reaches Long Island Sound (about 10 miles west of New Haven). Follow the river north about 10 miles. Both maps are within a few miles (at most) of this point.

Day 1, Osbornedale State Park
Derby, CT

From Rt. 8 (northbound or southbound) in Derby, take the Rt. 34 exit, and go west on Rt. 34 for a little over a mile. Turn right on Cedric Avenue. After about 0.2 miles, go right at the stop sign, and follow the O signs leading you to the parking area on Chatfield Street.

Day 2, Ansonia Nature Center
Ansonia, CT

Note: it's easy to get misplaced in the residential streets around the Ansonia Nature Center. We would encourage you to follow the directions carefully, and watch for O-signs.

From Rt. 8 southbound: Take exit 17. At the end of the ramp, go left for about 20 meters and then immediately turn right onto Atwater Avenue (note: none of the streets have street signs). On Atwater Ave., go about 0.2 miles to the stop light on Division Street, on the Ansonia/Derby border. Go right on Division Street. Just after you cross the river, Division St. becomes Elm St. (Rt. 243). Continue on Elm to the intersection with the Ansonia Police Department on your left. Bear right staying on Rt. 243, which is now Platt St. Bear left at top of hill, go to Stop sign. Continue straight until you see the Baptist Church on your left and turn right onto Benz St. Stay on Benz St., following the nature center signs until you come to Milan St. Turn left onto Milan and continue straight into the Nature Center parking lot on Deerfield Rd.

From Rt. 8 northbound: Take exit 16, which will put you on Pershing Drive going northeast. After about 0.3 miles, go right on Division Street (on the Ansonia/Derby border). Stay on Division Street and cross the river, and continue with directions from above at underlined text
