Vinland

1896   Estate was sold to Hamilton McKnown Twombly and his wife Florence Vanderbilt Twombly

The Breakers

1885   Cornelius Vanderbilt II bought a wooden house in Newport called "The Breakers" from Pierre Lorillard, designed by architect Peabody & Stearns
1892   Original wooden structure burned down in a fire
1893   Vanderbilt commissioned Richard Morris Hunt to design a villa to replace the wooden house that was burned a year earlier, construction begins
1895   Completion of The Breakers
1971   Added to the National Register of Historic Places
1994   Designated a National Historic Landmark

By-the-Sea

Location:   Bellevue Avenue facing onto Marine Avenue

1860   Completion of "By-the-Sea"
1946   Mansion was demolished by Ray Alan Van Clief, then-owner of Rosecliff, to join its lands with those of Rosecliff

Beechwood

1851   Construction of Beechwood Mansion began, originally built for owner Daniel Parish
1853   Completion of Beechwood
1856   Original house burns and is rebuilt almost identically by the same architects
1881   Astor family purchases Beechwood
1888-1890   Renovations by Richard Morris Hunt to add a ball room
2010   Estate is bought for $10.5 Million dollars by Larry Ellison

Marble House
