Foreign Language Teaching and Technology

3 graduate credits

A critical overview of technologies and applications used to facilitate the teaching and learning of foreign languages. The course offers hands-on practice and the study of theoretical frameworks for integrating best practices in technology-enhanced language learning (TELL) in secondary and postsecondary education. Taught in English with examples from several languages. The course will utilize the Culpeper Language Resource Center.

Prerequisite: Conversational and writing ability in French, German, Italian or Spanish; or by permission of the instructor.

Note to certified teachers: MD 489 will count as 45 hours of CEU equivalency. The CT State Department of Education's "Connecticut Guidelines for the Issuance of Continuing Education Units Required for Certification," September 1999 (p. 9), states that The Bureau of Certification and Teacher Preparation makes the necessary calculation.

A critical overview of technologies and applications used to facilitate the teaching and learning of foreign languages. Hands-on practice and theoretical frameworks. Review of major methodologies, foreign language standards, and research trends in second language acquisition for integrating best practices in technology-enhanced language learning (TELL) in secondary-school and post-secondary curricula. Classroom teaching techniques. Some attention to technology administration and distance learning. Experience with teaching or tutoring highly recommended. Taught in English with examples from several languages.

Prerequisites: at least one conversation and one composition course plus a cultural elective, all in a target language (French, German, Italian, Spanish) with a Major program at Fairfield University or by permission of the instructor.
