University Council minutes

The minutes for meeting of 20 October 2004 were distributed/ reviewed/ accepted 7-0-0

Agenda: The agenda for the meeting was ordered as follows:

1. alcohol on campus involving upperclassmen
2. sub committee reports
3. student senate update

1^ST AGENDA ITEM...Alcohol Education for upperclassmen

• Marc D'Angelillio started discussion on the use of drugs off campus and student's impressions that drug use was expanding beyond the casual use of marijuana and the constant problem with alcohol.
• It was noted that Wellness & Prevention had just sponsored an alcohol awareness week that was geared towards the entire student body.
• It was also noted that for an alcohol awareness campaign to be effective, it must come from students' peers.
• Professor Harding cited a report that 15% of college students are involved with drugs.
• It was decided to invite Jeanne DiMuzio to our next University Council meeting so you can provide an update on initiatives to deal with these issues.

2^ND AGENDA ITEM...Sub committee reports

There was no updated report from either sub committee but Professor Harding did report on the Academic Division's initiatives to deal with Academic Honesty and Plagiarism.

• The Academic Council sent our a survey to in April to gain a perspective on academic honesty
• AVP Grossman distributed a letter in April to all faculty dealing with this topic
• There was an August 2004 three hour workshop for faculty on the topic
• A September announcement requested that our policy on academic honesty and plagiarism be placed in professor's syllabi.

3^rd AGENDA ITEM...Student Senate update

• The Student Senate is reviewing changes to its' constitution
• Positive comments about Public Safety adding a stop sign on the new boulevard
• CNS is in the process of purchasing anti-spy ware programs for campus computers
• The Peer Advising Fair drew over 100 students; attendance somewhat disappointing; Stronger publicity needed for next year
• Student Senate is preparing an operations survey on food, bus & student life
• FUSA is working on a "Town Fair" for the local children
• The Stag Card may have a number of local merchants available for use with the card sometime in the mid spring semester.
• Student Services is working on a "convenience store addition" in the snack bar

A motion to conclude the meeting was made and seconded and approved and the meeting ended at 11:25 am

The next meeting of the University Council will be:

Wednesday 01 December 2004 at 10 am in the Barone Sullivan Room 200

Student sector will chair.
