Invitational Summer Institute
July 1 – 26

Sixteen teachers (grades K-13) are invited to become Fellows of the Connecticut writing Project at Fairfield University. The Institute focuses on writing, research, presentations, and discussions of literacy issues. Participants may earn six graduate credits or receive a small stipend. With the successful completion of the Institute, Fellows become teacher/consultants who lead in-service sessions in districts and at the CWP. Meets daily 8:30 – 3:30.
Invitational Summer Institute Application

 

Advanced Institute
July 14 – 19

This Institute is open to teachers (grades K-13) who have participated in an Institute or another CWP professional development program. The Institute will give participants an opportunity to nurture their creative and reflective spirits. In a relaxed atmosphere, participants will explore and develop their own writing, using techniques or approaches they may also use in their classrooms under the guidance of a published CWP teacher/consultant. Participants will have the option of staying in campus housing (residential suites) during the Institute. Limited to 20 participants. Hours to be determined. Campus housing cost $175. Tuition $150.

 

Early Literacy Institute
July 8 – 12, 15 – 17

This Institute will focus on guided reading instruction in the K-2 classroom as part of a comprehensive literacy program. Participants will be introduced to running records, matching books to children, and classroom management strategies that support guided reading instruction.
Tuition: $425.

 

Institute for Exploring Craft in the Writer’s Workshop: Grades 2 –5
July 8 – 12, 15 – 17

How do teachers help their students develop quality writing? This Institute will focus on writer’s craft. Participants will learn to read as writers and will explore strategies for teaching craft to their students. The classroom structures that support young writers will also be discussed. This Institute is open to teachers in grades 2 – 5. Hours: 8:30 – 2:00
Tuition: $425.

 

Institute on the Teaching of Writing at the Secondary Level
July 8 – 19.

This participatory workshop for teachers ( grades 6 – 12) focuses on three areas: Teaching, Writing and Learning. Participants will learn how teachers’ strategies can help students achieve their potential as writers. You will examine current pedagogical theory as well as effective practices. Topics may include: authentic assessments, writing workshops, writing across the curriculum, writing and technology, incorporating state standards, and addressing the needs of diverse populations. This institute is appropriate for teachers of English, science and social studies/history. Meets daily 9 – 1:30.
Tuition: $450

 

Institute on the Teaching of Literature
July 8 – 12

Teachers (grades 7 – 12) will read and discuss contemporary literature in various genres to explore their own experience as readers of literature and to understand ways that they and their students can respond to and write about literary texts. Participants will also become familiar with instructional strategies that can help students become attentive and thoughtful readers, while preparing them for success on the CAPT.. Limited to 20 participants. Meets daily 8:30 – 1:00.
Tuition: $325.

 

Juxtaposing Readings: Institute for Examining Social Issues in the High School Classroom
July 1 – 3, 8 – 12.

Urban and suburban high school teachers will explore creative ways to juxtapose fiction with non-fiction, film with essay. This Institute will challenge us and our students to look at the familiar high school literature through a variety of lenses, upending preconceptions, deepening and enriching responses. While focusing on issues of race, class, language and power, we will model effective reader-response and writing-to-learn strategies. Hours to be determined.
Tuition $425.

 

Institute for teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL) Learners
July 8 – 11, 15 – 18

This Institute will invite both K-12 mainstream teachers of ESL students and ESL teachers to understand the research on second language acquisition and exchange ideas about effective ESL and mainstream practices. We will address the myriad issues surrounding the teaching of ESL learners and how best to incorporate ESL students into the mainstream class. Hours to be determined.
Tuition: $425.

 

Young Writers’ Institute
July 8 – 19

This Institute is open to students entering grades 6 – 10. Students explore many aspects of writing and have the opportunity to talk with published writers from the area. Scholarships are available. Meets daily 9:00 – 1:00. Lunch will be provided. Transportation will be available.
Tuition: $600
