Reading Suggestion

51e+L6l9muL._SS500_
I have an essay in this new edited volume (from Judith Lancioni). My piece is called: "The Dating Games: Real Lessons Learned from Unreal Programs." The book is available now. I haven't read the other essays yet (I am still waiting on my copy!) but from the table of contents, it certainly looks like a good read. Check it out.

Words of Wisdom

Not really, but here are some words from me about Facebook and social media as marketing from The Stamford Advocate.

Davey Gets Blessed

Today was the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi and this means the blessing of all the animals. Davey walked over to his neighborhood Jesuit parish (St. Francis Xavier on 16th Street) and being the good Catholic dog he is, got blessed. He even got a nice certificate, all without any CCD classes. We are hoping God intervenes with the barking soon.

Fall

Summer is almost over (I say almost because I still have keys to th beach house through October!), but classes are certainly in session and the weather certainly feels like Fall. I am only teaching one graduate class this semester and so my office hours are mostly on Tuesdays. Check this page if you want to come see me. For Junior and Seniors, there is still time to apply for a Fall internship. Go here to see all the details. Below is a picture of my dog, showing some Corgi realness on the beach on Fire Island.

When Love Takes Over

IMG_0907
Above is Miss Kelly Rowland serving realness on the beach in Fire Island. She sang what is arguably the song of the summer (“When Love Takes Over” ) this past weekend. Speaking of over, the Fairfield semester starts in just a few days. Over indeed. I have some office hours posted and be sure that if you’re looking for an internship that you start here.

Summer Update

IMG_0659
I realize it has been quite a while since I updated the fives of tens of gudelunas.com loyalists out there. Here’s my summer net-net: great (long) weekends on Fire Island (witness Davey above taking to the beach in Pines like the real royal dog he is), some interesting reading, plenty of time with good friends, a cameo down in my old stomping grounds of Rehoboth Beach, and even some time at home in NYC. All in all, an amazeballs summer.

Father's Day

Here is a picture of my son and a link to a story in the Connecticut Post where I commented about Father’s Day. Note the major nautical Ralph Lauren look in the photo below.
IMG_0579IMG_0570

The Highline...Finally

IMG_0538
There is nothing like 5 days in Central Florida to make you realize how much you love New York City, and there is perhaps no better reason right now to love New York City than The Highline. I’ve been waiting for a while for the “park in the sky” (a bloc from my home, natch) and it opened on Monday for the first time. I first “blogged” (ugh hate that term) about the Highline almost exactly a year ago. The park met my expectations and the architectural details are sublime. I posted a gallery of photos here. The photos, not to mention the park itself, is well worth a look.

DJ Culture

IMG_0427
While I am not spending my sabbatical writing the definitive history of the circuit as I once promised (threatened?), I still managed to get away to Walt Disney World for the past few days to hear some great DJ sets at OMW. Above is Edie Baez at the opening party last Thursday. The best set of the weekend: Roland Belmares who had me dancing all night Saturday. Just brilliant.

And Summer...

IMG_0069IMG_0071
The above photos are from last week’s rather gloomy graduation at Fairfield. Despite the rain we managed to walk (twice) and thus ended anther semester. I’m now off to Chicago for the International Communication Association Conference and then, well, then summer begins. It is worth noting that office hours and the like are done for the semester.

Fire Island in the Spring

Davey made his Fire Island Pines debut this past weekend. We went out to open up the beach house for the summer and perhaps the only person more excited than me was Davey. I know no one really likes to see pictures much less videos of other people’s children, but have a look at the video below and just be wowed by the uncontrollable cuteness that is my corgi. I also posted some still shots of the surprisingly warm weekend here.

Davey the Dog!

Words do no justice to our new dog Davey. He is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and he is just perfect. He is just eight weeks old as of this weekend and he is quickly adjusting to life in Manhattan. I posted some pictures of Davey here and made this video of the little guy running around his new West Chelsea crib. Davey is what the breeders call a “mis-mark” since he has too much white on his head, but I think he serves some major looks. I made a little video above that captures even more of his adorable self. More Davey photos and videos will follow to be certain. (PS: You’ll need Quicktime to view the above video. You can get it here)

Famous People + Me

IMG_0178_2IMG_0187IMG_0180IMG_0181_2

I got to meet some folks I think are beyond neat at the GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday night in New York City. Top left is Dave Hall and I with Tim Gunn from “Project Runway”; top right is me with Ana Ortiz from “Ugly Betty”; bottom left are style power couple Simon Doonan and Jonathan Adler with Dave and I; bottom right is Michael Urie (from “Ugly Betty” as well) with my friend George and I. Truth be told, I was most excited to meet happy-chic designer Jonathan Adler (also of “Top Design” on Bravo). His lighting fixtures hang above my couch, his vases are on my bookcase, his wallpaper is on my wall, and his sheets are on my bed. I told him all of this and I think he was scared (but he did say he appreciated the patronage). Tim Gunn, Michael Urie and Ana Ortiz are all beyond nice (Ana Ortiz is perfection!) and it is great that they took the time to support an organization well worth supporting. I posted a few other photos I took over the course of the evening here.

Advising and Office Hours

For advising week I have posted extra office hours on this page. Remember, you DO NOT need to seek out your advisor prior to the Communication Group Advising session on Friday 4.3 from 5-7 PM. Check your Stagweb email for details about this group advising, when you should show up, where, and the like. We will be handing out PIN numbers then and this advising session is when you should come with questions about course selection. Remember, this group advising session on 4.3 is when you must get your PIN!

Some commentary

I was quoted in this piece about mainstream media coverage of the current financial crisis. Check it out here.

Great TV

I have been beyond obsessed with “Mad Men” of late, and while I know I am really late on this, the show is brilliant. I’ve been catching on the second season on train rides home from campus and it has made me look forward to even the slowest and most crowded Metro-North trains. Notably, the mid-century vibe of the show alone is enough to earn my praise, but a show that so beautifully captures the formative years of the US advertising industry is a big bonus. Below is one of the best clips from the show, when the protagonist introduces the “Carousel” slide projector, adding some advertising magic to what is essentially a wheel.

Miami

6a00d8341bf7f753ef00e55176e81a8833-800wi
I spent the three-day holiday weekend in Miami. While California modernism will always top Miami Deco in my eyes, 82 degrees also tops 25 degrees in NYC.

When new technology was actually new.

This clip has been viral of late, and it is just too perfect to not post here as well. The clip is a 1981 report from KRON in San Francisco predicting that one day we’d get the news of the day...wait for it...through a computer. Maybe if newspapers took this sort of stuff seriously in 1981 they wouldn’t be in as much financial trouble as they are today.

Sworn In

AUT_NVTBRA_PIO-2CAN_JM-1
So Obama was sworn in and apparently sworn in again tonight after some concerns that the initial oath wasn’t good enough. Talk about some magic hocus-pocus type stuff. Apparently the oath is little more than ritual, but it is a ritual strong and powerful enough that Chief Justice Roberts ran over to the White House tonight. I was quoted in a newspaper article about the new President’s speech yesterday that followed the apparently fraudulent oath. You can read that piece here. I am also fascinated by this web page (it takes some time to load) which compiles a whole lot of newspaper covers from around the world from the day following the swearing in. I can’t help but to wonder for how many more new Presidents we will have a collection of print newspaper covers to look at. I guess, notably, the only actual covers of newspapers I saw today were online.

Good TV

Summer Heights High” was an incredible series from Australian TV that was aired in The US on HBO (or at least HBO In Demand). It was pretty brilliant. I know this as both my friends AND my students who came back from study abroad in Australia loved the program equally. If you haven’t seen it, it is worth the investment. So random!

New Semester

IMG_0049
While I am in complete denial about having to leave Palm Springs, and the very warm weather, I am always excited to get back to New York City and to the Fairfield Campus. The new semester, mistakenly called “Spring semester” kicks off on Monday. I posted my updated office hours, some new syllabi and other relevant things in the academic section of Gudelunas.com. The Internship page will update soon enough with dates and times of the workshops scheduled for the Spring semester. See you around campus. PS: Love the sunset metaphor picture?

Joshua Tree

IMG_0110
I posted some photos here from a trip to Joshua Tree National Park today. It is a really magical place. If you click on the photos in the gallery that this link takes you to the photo should enlarge for easy viewing, click again and you should see thumbnails of all the photos. I haven’t tested this action on a PC yet, so shout if it does not work.

Tahquitz Canyon

IMG_0048
I am spending Christmas and New Years in Palm Springs (Loves it!) and the other day DH and I hiked Tahquitz Canyon. The waterfall was as gorgeous as I remember from the last time I walked that canyon (think Hypercolor t-shirt and Bugle Boy Jeans) and thanks to abundant snowfall on the mountains, the melting runoff was gorgeous. The canyon, like much of Palm Springs, is under the jurisdiction of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. I posted some pictures here and will be sure and post some more photos from the my extended winter holiday in Palm Springs by the end of the week. And yes, it is insanely gorgeous weather here in Palm Springs.

The 2G Tree

We put up the Christmas tree today at home in NYC. Below is a snapshot. Think simple mid-century with soft lights and vintage ornaments.

The Springs

I''ve been spending an extended Thanksgiving Break in Southern California, first in San Diego and now Palm Springs. See the video below that captures my time in Palm Springs.

Obama!

obama4
Gudelunas.com can now confirm that Obama won the election. Here is a piece in The Connecticut Post where I was quoted about expectations of the President-Elect.

Canadians!

This is pretty funny and rather remarkable that VP candidate Sarah Palin didn't realize this was a prank sooner. Election day is upon us and I'd be fibbing if I didn't say I had major anxiety.

Model Student

The above is a page of the new Annenberg School Ph.D. catalog. I am a proud Penn/ASC grad and flattered by the page in the program brochure. And, let's just relax with the sassy comments about the photo.

More Punditry

I was quoted in a piece in today's Connecticut Post about Sarah Palin's and Joe Biden's debate performances. Below are some of Palin's winks.

Speaking of Facebook...

I got quoted in a piece in the CT Post today. Yes, the writer spelled my name wrong, but it really isn't an easy name. At any rate, here is a link to the piece in the Connecticut Post.

This has been posted all over the place, and with good reason.

Fall Semester.

IMG_0820
It seems like it was just yesterday I posted a note about the start of summer and here I am already lamenting the end of the semester. That said, the summer won't really end until my lease runs out on the summer share, but in the meantime it is back to school. I posted some new syllabi for the Fall term here and also have started updating my office hours here. I will be updating office hours weekly.

Summer Songs.

While the end of summer is always a bittersweet thing (mostly bitter, not too sweet) I always look forward to catching up with students after the summer hiatus. One question I love to ask is "what's your vote for song of the summer?" When students ask me, I always have a list, and this year DJ Corey Craig's "song of the Summer" podcast does a great job summing up virtually all of my nominees. Check out his site to download the podcast and listen. Below is Corey spinning at our house party in the Pines.
IMG_0758

Summer.

It has been a while since I posted anything new on Gudelunas.com. For all the loyalists out there (Hi KIM!) I thought I'd try to throw up something new. But really all I have is a link to the same galleries I've been linking to for a while that really contain interchangeable pictures of me and beach housemates "really doing it" on Fire Island. My folks also visited the island for the first time ever (not to mention NYC for the first time since I've lived here) and some of those pictures are posted as well. Otherwise, summer is, and remains, my favorite time of the year. IMG_1381

Fourth of July

I spent another great weekend in Fire Island Pines. We were there for the annual Invasion (see the photo below) along with BayDance and Independance at Reflections. Invasion is a pretty neat Island tradition and while I no longer have the patience to stand in crowds of gawking tourists (I like to think of those of us with shares as part-time residents) the event is a neat one. You can read more about it here. It was a great weekend to catch up with friends, spend some quality time in the sun and dance. I posted some photos in my web gallery here. Email me if you need a password.
IMG_0591IMG_0588

Highline

My new home in West Chelsea is a block away from an entrance to the forthcoming Highline Park on Manhattan's West Side. The park promises to be excellent when it opens late this Fall and if you're having trouble envisioning a park in the sky this nice (and curt) video does a good job explaining the history and future of the Highline. Yeah, it is narrated by Ethan Hawke (preservation + green initiatives + downtown hip = celebs swarming).

Disney

IMG_0508
Above I am showing Mickey and Minnie how to be theatrical. Walt Disney World this past week(end) was fun and I posted some pics in my galleries. While I will always prefer the Magic Kingdom in SoCal, Orlando's Walt Disney World has some pretty cool stuff. The oddest thing about the weekend, and trust there are many odd things about the weekend, was getting fingerprinted while walking into the Magic Kingdom. I was told it has something to do with child abductions, but I can't help but to wonder what Disney really does with my fingerprints. The number of cameras on "Disney property" and the amount of security guards really makes me think that "Disney property" may be an ideal example of the modern panopticon. Fun? You bet!Below I am asking Walt and Mickey about their views on privacy.

Memorial Day

IMG_0484
The Memorial Day weekend was beyond perfect. The weather is historically hideous over the first big holiday weekend of the summer, but like last year this year was a full weekend of sun. I was out on Fire Island and I posted pictures in my password protected galleries. You can access them through this link, or by clicking on the menu above and then looking for "photo galleries" under the home option. If you need a password just email me. The two new galleries are Fire Island 08:01 and Fire Island 08:02. The latter is Memorial Day weekend. Also, don't miss the special video of "Leo on Whitney".

Spring in the Pines

This weekend was my first weekend on Fire Island and as expected it was a magical time. I posted some photos of some of the colors of the island in the Spring. Trees and flowers were still very much blooming (not good for my out of control allergies) but the color of the sky this early in the summer season was really nice (read: purple). I am very much now looking forward to Memorial Day weekend when things really get started.IMG_1264

Perez

DSC00460
We ran into Perez Hilton at Matsuri on Saturday night. I actually quit reading his blog but do respect the man for really figuring out how to monetize the whole blog thing. The odd thing about Perez is that once the man himself became a brand the blog became inherently less interesting. That said Perez will have a place in tomorrow's media textbooks. The fact that he is Cuban and gay will make his mark even more interesting.

Meredith.

At the NGLJA benefit last week we ran into Meredith Vieira who was as nice as could be. The photo is courtesy of Jason Smith. And special shout out to Dave Hall who claims I systematically exclude him from my site. See: I DON'T!

Heavy Rotation

IMG_1222
This was a view from my porch over the weekend. Nothing against the view from my NYC apartment, but the above view wins.

Girl Power?

Last week I journeyed out to New Jersey to see the Spice Girls at the Izod Center (dead brand alert...the clothing, not the musical group). Say what you will about the Spice Girls not being "serious" music, having any credibility, being manufactured, in it for the money and on and on and on. These are all valid critiques, but the show was amazing (Geri singing "It's Raining Men" defied all expectations). Two hours of pure pop in every sense of the word. The oddest thing about the concert was that apart from my friends, the audience was a lot of really young girls. The girls behind me were 17, drunk, and would have been 10 years old when the the Spice Girls released their last single. I am as confused now about what the Girls' pre-packaged message of "girl power" is for these very young fans as I was when I wrote a paper on the topic back in college in the late 90s. All I know is that their brand of sexed-up feminism is intoxicating for an arena full of very young women, and that is something worth thinking about. Below is a photo I snapped on the iPhone.
IMG_0007

Back to Winter.

551747539405_0_BG
After a lovey time in Palm Springs visiting the family, seeing friends and simply spending some quality time poolside, it is back to the harsh reality of a New York City winter. Spring semester starts freakishly early this year (Monday) and consequently I posted new syllabi and updated office hours and the like here on my web page. I'll get some photos posted from my trip out West relatively soon. OK, countdown begins now for the first weekend of summer.

Holiday.

IMG_0356
It is almost time to had back to California for the Christmas holiday, and frankly not a moment too soon given the freezing weather (literally) here on the East Coast. I posted some photos from the SPI holiday party (held at a fierce Mannequin showroom in Cheslea-see above) and Leo's 30th birthday as well. (note: I re-did the password protected galleries slightly and it now asks for a username and password, these are both the same, and if you remember the old password it will work in both fields here, if you forget, just email me and I will let you know). It was a truly great holiday season, with a lot of fun parties and good people. Now, time for the actual holiday...

Redesign

So I have decided to give the old gudelunas.com a facelift. It all started with my new MacBook Pro, which I loaded up with Leopard and then ran into some coding problems with the old version of the website since I finally made the leap to an Intel chip. Since I was already doing a lot of re-working I thought it was as a good a time as any to freshen things up a bit. Okay, so major changes are mostly aesthetic, and really even those are minimal. What can I say, I like what I like? The menu has been re-organized a bit and I have moved my weekly updated office hours to their own page (located under the "academic" menu). I also started a site update page found under the "about" menu. Mostly for my own benefit, but yeah, it is there. Inevitably there are going to be some glitches, so feel free to email me if you're having trouble accessing a particular page. Those of you on a Windows box should know I haven't tested anything yet with Windows. But again, why are you still using a Windows PC anyway?

Summer Sunsets

IMG_1174
Never one to pass up an obvious metaphor, I thought the timing was right to post some photos of some of my favorite sunsets out on Fire Island. This past weekend the evenings were particularly, well, magical.

Labor Day

Technically the day before, but let me be the first website (take that OK! magazine!!) to publish pictures of Miles Edward Lesser, the happy healthy baby of Kim and Eli in Philadelphia. He is A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E and has more hair than me. That's what I know. That and I was P-A-R-A-N-O-I-D of dropping him. I didn't.
IMG_0279

Ascend(ed)

This past weekend in the Pines was Fire Island Pines Ascension. It was a great day of dancing on the beach, and as always I posted some photos in my galleries. Now as most folks know I love any chance to hear some good music and dance, but when the venue is a stunning beach with the Atlantic Ocean literally crashing at your feet you have an experience that can't be replicated in even the best nightclub. And while Ascension was beyond mah-jor, it is a reminder that summer is nearly over. Classes start in less than two weeks, I only have one more official weekend in the Pines, and today felt oddly like Fall. I'm off to Rehoboth this coming week to catch up with everyone in Delaware.
IMG_1129

Yeah, Magical.

IMG_1021
I finally got around to posting some photo libraries from the last few weekends on Fire Island. Highlights include the Invasion, Fourth of July, Dan G.'s first visit to the Pines and general summer magic on the Island. If you don't know the password to access the photos, and think you should, just email me.

Congrats Kim!

IMG_0975
Kim, btw, is the one with the baby in her belly. Yay!

My iPhone Review

apple-iphone
I spent this weekend tooling around with my new iPhone and folks keep asking me two questions: 1) How long did you wait in line? and 2) Does it match the hype? My answers, respectively, are no more than 33 seconds and yes. I'm no technology expert, but that haas never stopped me from elaborating. So here I go. I walked into the SoHo Apple store around 8.30 Friday night and walked right up to a register and got a new phone less than 3 hours after launch. The set-up was beyond easy and so far I am unable to put my iPhone down for more than three minutes. All of my relevant files from my Mac transferred without a hitch and the phone quality is good (if not maybe a bit too quiet); the touchscreen works flawlessly; the interface is really as friendly as you would expect from Apple; and the iPhone, well, works as advertised. The best part is the web browsing -- at least when you're connected to a WiFi network you can fly through web pages on your phone the way you do on your laptop. The AT&T Edge network can be a bit slow, but it isn't prohibitively so. I was still able to read some blogs on the Amtrak train back from Philly. Email is grand. The iPhone looks good. The iPod sounds great. So far the battery life seems a-ok. I kept it in my pocket this weekend with some keys and the like and still no scratches. If you're considering it, do it. Oh yeah I have a new phone number too, email me if you think you should have it.

Pride 07

Pride weekend here in NYC was, as expected, an event. The pier dance was magic, riding in the parade on the Diet Pepsi float was arguably the only proper way to understand the full spectacle of the parade, and seeing folks from Philly, DC and beyond is always great. I have some pics here that I took from the float and some pre-pride rooftop parties and the like. It is easy to be jaded about things like Pride in 2007, but then after a great weekend like last weekend when you see so many happy and mostly well-adjusted friends, you are really thankful for some angry drag queens back in the Village in 1969.

Fire Island Pines

IMG_0906
Memorial Day weekend on Fire Island was beyond great, and I have some photos posted here as proof. After many summers in Rehoboth Beach, Fire Island is proving to be a very worthy successor. The scenery is stunning, the beaches are amazing and, of course, the social scene is legendary. Indeed, a great weekend. I ran into several Rehoboth expats this past weekend and I kept getting asked how the two beach towns differ by my NY friends who have never been to Rehoboth. The easy answer is Rehoboth is to DC (read: cargo shorts and polos) as The Pines is to NYC (read: glamour), but that is too simple. I think the real difference between the Pines and Rehoboth is the fact that development on Fire Island has happened in a much more sensible manner: there are no hideous townhomes, sprawling "new home" developments, ridiculous McMansions built on lots intended for seaside cottages, outlet malls or obnoxious commercial developments choking the town. Since there are no cars at all on the island, there is also no traffic (and, ahem, parking tickets) to speak of. The fact that the Pines is dominated by stunning modernist homes built in harmony with the natural topography of the island, and that there is no noise ordinance (it is true you can dance and scream on the island without fear of offending anyone!), is really just icing on the cake. I still love Rehoboth, but I guess the old/new saying that you can't fight the real estate developers is true. They had their way in Rehoboth, but in the end I think I found a better way.

Graduation 2007

IMG_0833
Congratulations to the Fairfield University graduating class--especially the communication majors. It turned out to be a great day to walk across the Bellarmine Terrace and an even better day to meet some families down at the beach. I posted what few photos I took here. Keep in touch.

Nogurt.

pinkberry_01
I can not stop eating Pinkberry. I fell in love with whatever it is in LA and then moved a block away from one of their NYC stores. I have endured 30 minute waits, ludicrous prices and recent allegations that the company may have mislead consumers about exactly what they're serving. The company's website (the music alone makes the site worth a visit) says simply "We want to assure everyone who enjoys Pinkberry that the product is wholesome and made with fresh ingredients." Like gasoline? Bleach? Regardless the recent bad press (and, really, is that the best defensive the company can muster?...it is called crisis communication folks!) has not made the queue move any faster at my local Pinkberry. Yeah, so I am still eating it daily. Whatever it is. and I am also waiting patiently for an In & Out Burger and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and then I will be one very happy East Coast kid.

Go(ing) West

There can be few things more stressful in life than trying to find an apartment in Mnahattan. Never one to turn down a challenge, I decided to try my luck in a rental market that is at less than 1% vacancy and just insanely priced. I did, in fact, luck out and score some chic new digs in Chelsea. I had no intention of ending up in Chelsea, but with the Democrats back in charge of Congress, a Clinton running for the White House and Jody Watley on my iPod, I figured the 90s are back and so I'm living in Chelsea. Besides, the Roxy closed, so I figured it is safe. The good news is my new digs are not only great, but I can now suggest both an excellent broker who found my new apartment and movers that made for the least stressful (and cheapest) move ever.

The Springs

IMG_0765
A nice picture of the San Jacinto mountains, taken high above tea Easter Sunday in Palm Springs. I spent last week in the desert and really enjoyed the 8 consecutive 88-degree days. Special guest star Jason G. from NYC was in town for work and as many of you know nothing makes me more excited than introducing Palm Springs to first time visitors. After showing Jason the iconic architecture of the desert (below is a photo he took), we even stopped by a few "dance events." Ah yes, we did document me emerging from circuit retirement here on The Associates page. Back in NYC now, though I still cry a little tear every time I hear a Jody Watley remix. Which, not coincidentally, is a fairly frequent amount in my life.

Free Brenda

bilde
So the Brenda Dickson fascination continues. For reasons I can't quite express I am addicted to this woman--I think it has something to do with the cadence of her voice. First, there is this fabulous video update from Brenda about what she is up to "back in Hollywood" and then there is the twisted story of her divorce and ending up in jail in Hawai'i. The press releases on her website explain it all. Mostly. In case you forgot, Brenda exemplified what we mean by "camp" in this wonderful video. All of this is to say that once Brenda is released from jail she is well poised to make a big comeback. Enough Kathy Griffin reality programming, I'd much prefer a season of Brenda. Free Brenda!

Gideon Yago

OR6E8461
From left to right, Dr. Phillip Eliasoph, me, Gideon Yago from MTV News at the Quick Center at Fairfield Universty. I had the chance to ask Gideon some questions as part of the Open Visions lecture series event. Yeah, he totally stole my look.

Heavy Rotation

The new Peter Bjorn and John album is on heavy rotation on my iPod, and the video is even better.

Yeah, I'm Old.

Last Saturday Corey R. and I celebrated our dual birthdays at The Hotel on Rivington in what was, by all accounts, a really major party. Thanks of course to Corey for doing most (ok, really all) of the coordination, Jason G. for the real fierce music, Mike R. for designing our invite and of course everyone who travelled a few blocks and few hundred miles to help me celebrate. I posted some photos here.

cd_invite

This is camp.

I sometimes can't quite explain exactly what academics mean when they talk about "camp"....then Brenda Dickson comes along and makes any explanation completely unnecessary. Watch. Learn. Thanks Jason for the tip on this gem. WELL HELLO!

And then there is part two--with diet and fitness advice!

Fierce indeed.

I have been hoping and speculating that Apple would release a new gadget, and they have. Really, the iPhone is even more than I hoped for. The difficult part is waiting till June to get my grubby hands on one.

Aloha.

IMG_0351
My family and I spent Christmas in Hawai'i and just made it back to Palm Springs (in time for President Gerald Ford's funeral services in Palm Desert). I posted some pictures of the trip to Hawai'i here. It was a great time. We spent the entire holiday on Kaui'i which is remarkable. I now have two weeks in Palm Springs before heading back to NYC. The Palm Springs International Film Festival kicks off next week, making it an even better time to be in the desert.

The Semester End.

One more final to go (Wednesday) and then I'm off to Hawaii and Southern California for the Christmas Break. The lead-up to the break has been great--lots of holiday happenings and get-togethers with friends. I posted some pictures of Leo's birthday on the Associates page and will be sure to get some photos from Dan's annual holiday dinner in Philly soon. In the meantime, excited to escape to some more tropical destinations for a few weeks. Updates to come!

Red States. Blue People.

I was in San Antonio, Texas for the National Communication Association conference. I honestly didn't get to see too much of the town given a very busy schedule, but as always it was great to see everyone. I delivered two papers at NCA, and got some good feedback on both. Check out the updated CV for more details.

Forever Young

In what was clearly one of the highlights of my life, I had the chance to meet Joan Rivers Wednesday night. As many of you know, I have had a long fascination with Ms. Rivers, and her act at the Cutting Room in Manhattan reminded me why. In a word, she is fierce. She tackled nearly every taboo from terrorists to Michael Jackson, and a million topics inbetween. Thanks to Ben and Leo for facilitating this brush with celebrity.

The Summer...is Over.

I am heading back to NYC on Thursday, but wanted to first post some pictures from a fabulous summer in Rehoboth Beach. Thanks to everyone at 62 Henlopen, and all over town for that matter, for making the summer "one of the 10 best ever" (to quote Marvin Miller). There are four new albums from Rehoboth, take a look. My brother Will and my mother took many of the pictures.

Some Summer Reading

I wrote a piece for American Sexuality magazine, published online by the National Sexuality Resource Center. It is a light read. Check it out.
